Bengali Wedding Rituals:

• Welcoming the groom: The main wedding events on the wedding day starts when the Groom arrives at the Wedding venue. The groom’s close friends and relatives accompany him to the venue. The car/accomodation which is usually decorated is sent out with an elderly relative from the Bride’s side to invite the groom into the wedding venue. The groom usually takes the blessings of his mother and other elders and sets off for the wedding. Once the groom arrives at the venue, the bride’s mother or a married elder relative welcomes the groom. He is blessed and welcomed at the door with sweets and water. He is then accompanied by the bride’s family into the Groom’s room/ Dias. The friends and family of the groom mingle with the bride’s family and they are welcomed with refreshing drinks, sweets and snacks by the bride’s family.
• Ashirbad: Although this ritual can sometimes also take part as a separate event before the wedding, this is also celebrated just before the wedding rituals start in the evening. Once the groom’s family arrives at the venue, the members from the groom’s family bless the bride with gold ornaments. This is marked as a welcome gift from the groom’s side.
